What Is A Gravatar?

Here’s the answer right from the Gravatar website.

A gravatar, or globally recognized avatar, is quite simply an avatar image that follows you from weblog to weblog appearing beside your name when you comment on gravatar enabled sites. Avatars help identify your posts on web forums, so why not on weblogs?

When you comment on someone’s blog and that blog supports Gravatars, you’re picutre that you’ve uploaded to Gravator or provided a link to will display in that comment. It puts a face on who’s commenting which makes everyone feel a bit more cozy with each other. 🙂

Here’s a screen shot of a comment with my Gravatar.

So if you have a web presence in the form of a website, a blog, a LinkedIn account or just email, then head on over to the Gravatar website and create an account.  After you’ve logged in you can upload an image or link to an image that represents you.  It will be used throughout the web when you comment on blogs and anywhere else Gravatars are used.

From a business point of view you could put your logo on there as a Gravatar.  That way as you make your way around the web, you’ll have your logo or mug shot splattered all over in the right places, hopefully getting noticed by others and drawing web traffic to – YOU!!
