Polka Dot Dress

Hello Million Friends,

As much as I prefer to paint from life, I thought I would try my hand at this photo portrait using pastel. Later in the year I hope to take a pastel class from a friend of mine. I love the vibrancy of color and it’s not too difficult to correct an error, unless of course there is too much build up of pastel on the paper. A toothbrush works well for removing caked on pastel.

This work was completed on Canson paper. I purchased some Wallis paper and haven’t used it yet. I’ve also painted with pastel sticks on a very fine grit sand paper glued to a board. This works well and is very inexpensive for practicing.

Tomorrow morning as soon as I vacuum all the dust from the concrete floor and wash it, (between the buttery unison pastels and the soft rembrandt pastels, there’s lots of tiny pigment on floor.) I’m ready to work on an acrylic abstract tomorrow. I’ve been planning the painting in my head, hope it doesn’t wake me up tonight with more ideas.

Great painting. The painting really matches the photo.

I could never pastels, but I’m not very artistically inclined.

Hi Chris,

Nice work. Is this an oil pastel or chalk? With both I find one of my best tools is also Q-tips and the pencil eraser (the wood encased erasers that you can sharpen). I actually get such a build up- I use both like a brush.

I’ve just recently jumped back into charcoal and chalk with the PLR images. It’s a lot of fun to revisit different mediums, huh? -But really messy. I’m always covered from head to foot.

Hey Chris,

Place a large plastic garbage bag beneath your drawing board on the edge of the easel to catch the dust. I prfer this method to tin foil or paper towels. Less mess on the floor.
