Painting of the Day – Andrea

November 27, 2007 · 9 comments

Hello Million Friends,

Often times when there is a disruption in my work schedule, it plays havoc with my creative self.

After reading some articles on Empty Easel, I decided to work with the limited palette that Dan from Empty Easel suggests and have found that to be a tremendous help.

Also, since I paint on very large canvases it is sometimes hard to work without a medium, so I also mixed up stand oil and turpentine. I haven’t used it yet because I was working on a small portrait.

On a web site called CESTANDREA DESIGN AND TEXTILE ART BLOG- PARIS, I saw a photo of Andrea that really inspired me.

The color of her hair, her scarf and her coat. I emailed Andrea and asked her permission to paint the photo of her that she has displayed on her web site and she agreed to let me paint it.

This painting took me a couple days to complete. Andrea’s coloring reminded me of a copy I did of a Sargent painting (see below), so I thought it would be a breeze. It wasn’t a breeze, I kept seeing things I could change but after 2 days I am done futzing around with it for now.

Thanks,

:)
Now that is… wonderful, marvelous, I love the way you interpreted the photo: the lights in the eyes and the colour variation on black. For me its perfect!
Is it made with acrylic paints?
I send you a hug cause you did this so beautifully,
Andrea

oh, by the way, if you look at my “casquette” you can see something like a white spot at the right side. It is written “oui” (yes) and on the left side “no”. I position these words according to my humour in the morning: yes in front, or no, or nothing:)…

Have a great day, your painting made my day

I guess I missed that, but your coloring is beautiful and I had a great time painting you. Thanks for enjoying the painting, it is in oils.

Wow. That is awesome. I like it. I think you captured her coloring from the photo perfectly. I paint in Oils too. I find them richer in color and you got a rich look to her coloring. Her Photo alone has a story going with her peeking out around the corner with her camera and by you highlighting the flush of color on her face makes her look like she is doing some sort spying & She is flushed with excitement. Well done.

I read andrea’s blog and thus came to your blog. I have loved her photo too and i love your interpretation of it, somewhat abstracted in a way. Very nice.
