A Departure From The Norm

August 5, 2008 · 5 comments

Hello Million Friends,

This is a piece I painted yesterday. The black bag came from my eye doctor’s office and I just couldn’t part with it because it was so tasteful. My eyeglass case has a very funky look as well, but I can’t seem to locate it at the moment.

I wanted to paint something that wasn’t a landscape. I wanted to paint one simple object. Black, Magenta, Cad Yellow, White, Indian Red were the colors I used. Wow, did I ever learn a lot about painting a black object. Also, it’s was painted with acrylics not oil.

I dig your painting a lot Chris.
It is so cool. Quite an accomplishment too. It has a sort of Kafka-esque feeling about it.
Not exactly sad, but….pondering the meaning of life. I’ve been struggling lately. Not much art.
Trying though. Good for you! Keep it up!

So you mean black isn’t simply black-and-white?
This is a good place to return once in a while – back to basics – when having a bit of an Artists’ Block. You say in your next post that you paint your emotions, and here it’s like you’re saying to darker-feeling emotions: “Take this, you…black!” I think emotions are not as solid and final as “they” want us to believe, if there’s room made to allow light and life and other colors to flow through…so it makes perfect sense that you found such release in an unassuming ordinary object, and that you insisted on giving black your light-hearted touch… not just through the colors, but the way you painted it too. A sweet color study, Chris!
